Madeleine Sherwood – 93, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Madeleine Sherwood was a theatre, film, and television actress from Canada. She was well recognized as Mae/Sister Woman and ‘Miss Lucy’ in Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and ‘Sweet Bird of Youth’ on Broadway and in films. Sherwood is most remembered for playing the stern Reverend Mother Superior Lydia Placido in Sally Field’s A.B.C. sitcom “The Flying Nun.”
Sherwood was an active participant in the civil rights movement in the 1960s and the women’s movement in the 1970s. She was nominated for the “Order of Canada” on two occasions. On April 23, 2016, the award-winning actress died at 93 in her childhood home near Lac Cornu.
