Lava Lake on Ice!
Lava and ice are two contrasting elements. And maybe you’ve never heard of them co-existing until now! Mount Erebus is a volcano located in the southernmost part of Antarctica, and it is one of those few places on earth where you will find a lava lake surrounded by ice.
With a height of over 12,000 ft, Erebus is one of the highest mountains in the world. This peak was also the scene of a tragedy in 1979 when an airplane crashed near the crater. Scientists today believe that this lava lake continually affects our ozone layer, and there’s nothing we can do about it – scary, no?
