One of the most enduring images at any rock festival is a woman getting onto a man’s shoulders to view the stage better. At Live Aid in 1985, that must have been a very common sight, since with 72,000 people in the stadium and many of them standing, only a good few people were going to see much.
That’s why the height advantage was important. It also gave the person on the shoulders some respite from the soaring temperatures in the crowd on this peculiarly hot summer day in London.
