There’s a good chance that people may mistake Ian McKellen for the actor that played Albus Dumbledore on Harry Potter. However, he isn’t the same actor. Instead, McKellen built a name for himself with his work in Shakespearan genres and even superhero films like X-Men, where he played Magneto.

However, his most famous and internationally recognized work will be that of Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. In television work, McKellen is best known for playing the titular character in David Copperfield.
