Born Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, M.I.A. rose to fame as an underground artist in the 2000s, with her first album released in 2005. Due to her socially aware and politically charged lyricism as well as the seamless fusion of hip-hop and electronic music, she is highly acclaimed, even being appointed MBE in 2019.
M.I.A.’s life as a refugee became a strong inspiration in her works, which made her renowned for this style. She has come a long way since her start as she is now worth $14 million and this is expected to increase after her multiple releases like “CTRL” in 2020.
